By Birgül Tombul
Short film is one of the most creative and original genres of cinema. It stands out both for its contributions to the art of cinema and for providing in-depth explorations of the story the creator wants to tell.
A short film has a wide audience like feature-length films. The preferences of this niche audience are very important. Additionally, the recognition of short film producers with awards opens many doors for producers and directors. So, why is winning an award for a short film so important, and which awards are considered the most prestigious in the industry?
The Power of Short Film Awards to Advance Careers
Short film awards are a great career opportunity for directors and producers. Winning an award can be an important step toward finding financial support for new projects and gaining recognition in the industry. Such awards constitute a concrete reference confirming a director's talent and creative perspective.
Awards received are a serious driving force. They are an incredible source of motivation for the film's producer and director and bring industry recognition. They enable the formation of a wide network. That's why every short film producer participates in festivals with a serious claim.
Recognition of Creativity and Artistic Expression
Short films are often made with low budgets and limited resources. Whether animation, short film, or short documentary, all these genres within the short category require a certain cost to produce. Animation technology, in particular, is a very expensive sector, and the production of all of them requires serious dedication.
Therefore, a short film award means recognition not only of technical achievement but also of creativity and artistic expression. It's also important in terms of showing how successful a product made with limited resources can be. These awards remind audiences and the industry of how valuable a short film is as an art form.
International Recognition and Building a Global Network
Many international short film festivals offer an opportunity to reach global audiences as well as build a valuable network among filmmakers and join existing networks. This is especially important in the context of the film industry.
Winning an award enables the film to be recognized worldwide and allows the director to be involved in more projects internationally. Winning awards at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Oscar, and the Berlin Film Festival creates a significant impact on the cinema world.
Supporting Innovative and Independent Cinema
Short film awards generally support independent cinema and innovative narrative forms. These awards ensure the recognition of works by independent producers and directors who remain outside of major studios.
Since the short film production process is more practical compared to feature film production, there are more producers. Therefore, it's important to stand out and show yourself. It's necessary to produce a good and creative work. It's also very important to participate in good festivals and publish your short film on platforms that truly support short films.
In addition, thanks to these awards, experimental cinema, films with social messages, and creative narrative forms reach more viewers. It's quite possible for an award-winning film to be discovered quickly by the audience.

The Balcony is definitely one of the most beautiful dramas I've watched. A topic beautifully crafted around the axis of racism. This issue of racism is at the forefront of topics discussed around I. Wallerstein's Modern World System Theory in the world. Is the only truth really what the West presents to us, why is what's different considered inferior and bad, as outside the norm? are questions being asked and answers sought. Ultimately, it has been concluded that the world isn't just about the West, and every society has its own cultural structure. Also, no culture is superior or inferior to another. Essentially, with the intense migration phenomenon experienced everywhere in the world today, this problem has moved beyond the West-East axis and become a racism problem experienced throughout the world. I think every person can only be the enemy of what they don't know when they see themselves in such a superior and definitely correct position. With an overly arrogant perspective. The solution to such problems is possible by trying to understand, not filling gaps in our knowledge with assumptions, and developing our ability to empathize.
"Leylak" nominated for awards in Various Categories at 2021 Sidewalk FF, 2021 Galway FF, 2021 Rhode Island IFF, 2021 Tribeca FF, 2021 Woods Hole FF, 2021 Short SFF, 2021 Port Townsend FF, 2021 Tacoma FF, 2021 New York Shorts IFF, 2021 Leiden IFF - Best Short Film Award; 2022 Atlanta FF, 2021 Boston FF, 2021 Breckenridge Festival of Film, 2021 Fargo FF, 2022 Florida Shorts, 2021 Fort Lauderdale IFF, 2021 Hollyshorts FF, 2021 INDİE Memphis FF, INDY Shorts IFF, 2021 Leiden IFF, 2021 Lone Star FF, 2021 Maine IFF, 2021 Nashville FF, 2022 Newfilmmakers Los Angeles, 2021 Newport Beach FF, 2021 Norwich FF, 2021 Rhode Island IFF, 2022 San Francisco Indie Short Festival, 2021 Savannah FF, 2022 Sedona IFF, 2021 Short Shorts FF, 2021 Sulmonacinema FF, 2021 Tirana FF, 2021 Woods Hole FF is a wonderful drama you'll watch with sadness. Nadir Sarıbacak impresses with his acting. Our hero's profession is a bit different from the professions we're accustomed to. A grave digger. His wife in the hospital has died due to Covid, but he can't tell this to his daughter. His daughter wants to go to her mother, she has even bought her a bouquet of lilac, her favorite flower. But they can never go to her mother, or rather, the father finds a way not to take her. The next day, they set out to attend the mother's burial ceremony. Those ups and downs, struggles in the film are quite impressive. You should definitely watch the film. It's a very important production, especially in terms of reminding us of the intense tragedy of the Covid period. When one watches it, they say, "What days we lived through."
"Migrants" received the 2021 BAFTA/La Student Film Awards- BAFTA/LA Student Film Award Nominee; 2022 Cineuphoria Awards-Top Ten Of The Year, Best Animated Film, Best Animated Character, Freedom of Expression Honorary Award, Best Film Nominee; 2021 Sapparo ISFF-Best Non Dialogue Jury Prize; 2022 Saturnia FF-Best Animation Short Award, 2021 Short Shorts FF&Asia- Save the Darth Competition, Best Short Film Nominee; 2021 Visual Effects Society Awards-VES Award. It's a wonderful drama you'll watch with excitement. The issue of migration, which affects the world most deeply, is conveyed to the audience by being processed with environmental problems with great creativity. Our heroes, the mother and baby polar bears, now have to migrate due to global warming. In the place they go, other bears don't want them. Polar bears subjected to exclusion and mistreatment realize they are not alone while running away. All polar bears are reported to a boat by border security and sent away. Unfortunately, some of the people who are immigrants and refugees in today's world face such problems. Millions of people go to different countries every year due to wars and various other reasons. Among these, especially irregular immigration is quite risky. The image in the last scene was exactly the posture of baby Alyan who washed up on the Aegean shores, and it deeply shocked me. With the hope of finding the prosperous and free life we deserve in our own country and not being subjected to any discrimination in the country where we are accepted. I definitely recommend the film to everyone.
"My Stuffed Granny" won the 2015 Athens Animfest-Best Greek Animated Short; 2014 Edinburg IFF-Best New British Animation; 2015 Hamptons IFF-Student Film Award; 2015 IFF For Children And Young Audience Schlingel-Best Short Film; 2014 Montréal World FF-Best Animation Film; 2015 Tokyo Anime Award-Slecial Jury Award; 2014 Politiers FF-Jury Prize Nominee; 2016 LAGFF-Best Short Film Orpheus Award Nominee; 2015 Corti Da Sogni Antonio Ricci ISFF- Premio Giuseppe Maestri Nominee. I will recommend a both very cute and highly awarded animation to you. My Stuffed Granny is a beautiful animation you'll enjoy watching. Our hero's grandmother is quite appetitive, and her retirement pension is the only source of income for the poor family. No matter what they do, it's impossible to feed the grandmother; she might even give her life on this appetitive path. :)) Financial difficulty is such a big problem, especially if your family is large and you have no guarantee of finding healthy food for them at every meal, one can really feel helpless. Returning to our film, the film has a very entertaining perspective. It has good advice on being frugal. I definitely recommend watching it. You know what they say, "If life gives you oranges, make jam!"
"The Driving Seat" has received numerous awards and nominations: 2017 Dinard British FF-Best Short Film; 2017 Shuffle Festival-Best Short Film; 2017 We Like Em SFF-Audience Award; Best Actor Nominee, 2016 The Smalls F-Best Comedy Nominee, 2017 Taos Shortz FF- Honorable Mention Nominee, 2017 Sunderland Shorts- Special Jury Mention Nominee, 2017 Shuffle F- Best Short Film Nominee, 2017 ISLE Of Man FF-Best Comedy Short Nominee, 2016 Houston Comedy FF-Best Actress, Best Cinematography Nominee, 2017 ECU Europen IFF-Festival Award Nominee, 2016 Crystal Palace IFF-Best Comedy Nominee. Another of our films that has received and been nominated for numerous awards, The Driving Seat is a romantic comedy you'll enjoy watching. Our heroes are an aging couple looking for excitement and novelty in their lives, and they also reminisce about the old days in a different style. After all, they think a little craziness wouldn't hurt. It's an entertaining film, I recommend it.
"Brotherhood" has received many awards and nominations: 2020 Academy Awards, USA- OSCAR Nominee; 2019 Amiens IFF- Best Short Film, Prix Du Jury Jeune; 2019 Aspen Shortfest- The Ellen, Jury Award; 2018 Cairo IFF-Youssef Chahin Award for the Best Short Film; 2018 Carthage FF- Tanit d'Or; 2019 Clermont-Ferrand ISFF-Special Mention of the Jury, Grand Prix Nominee; 2019 DOCUFAST İDSFF-Best Short Film; 2019 Galway FF-Short Film Award; 2019 Guanajuato IFF-Signis Award, Honorary Mention; 2019 INDY Shorts IFF-Grand Prize; 2019 Melbourne IFF-Best Short Film; 2018 Montreal Festival of New Cinema-Prix Du Public Short Film, Grand Prix Short Film; 2019 Raindance FF-Jury Prize; 2019 Sanfrancisco IFF-Golden Gate Award; 2019 Satisfied Eye IFF-Best Short Screenplay; 2019 The International SFF Of Cyprus-Best Director Award; 2018 Toronto IFF-Best Canadian Short Film; 2019 Uruguay IFF-Best Short Film; 2018 Whistler FF-EDA Award; 2018 Stockholm FF, 2019 Sundance FF, 2019 Tampere FF, 2019 The International SFF of Cyprus-Various Category Nominees. Brotherhood, which has received and been nominated for a very high number of awards, is one of the most effective drama films you'll watch with curiosity. It's a film between our hero and his son who joined a radical group, then regretted it and returned. We can actually see the reasons that pushed that young man there and the political process. Another aspect of the film is the issue of women, who are the most victimized in every difficult environment. It's a very impressive, worth thinking about, and worth watching good film. It's so impressive that I can say you don't know what to say. Different difficulties, pains, equations experienced in different parts of the world. You should definitely watch it.
"The Missing Scarf" won the 2013 American SFA-Best Animated Short Film Jury Award; 2013 Cork IFF-Grand Prix Irish; 2014 Dallas IFF-Grand Jury Prize; 2013 Foyle FF-Best Irish Animation; 2013 Galway Film Fileadh, 2013 L.A. Short Fast, 2017 LeonAwards Jury Prize; 2014 Linoleum International Contemporary Animation And Media Art Festival- Jury Prize; 2013 Memphis Indie FF, 2013 New Hempshire FF, 2014 Provincetown IFF, 2014 River Bend Festival, 2014 San Francisco IFF, 2013 Savannah FF-Best Animation; 2013 Valladolid IFF-EFA Short Film Award; 2015 Los Angeles Independent FF, 2014 IFTA Award, 2014 Glasgow SFF, 2014 European Film Awards, 2014 British Animation FF-Best Animation Short Film Nominee. Our film, a wonderful animation The Missing Scarf, is a very thought-provoking animated film. Our hero is, as the name of the film suggests, in search of his missing scarf. While searching for his scarf, he actually helps solve many person-dependent problems. But how are concerns about our environment, our world, our existence alleviated, or can they be alleviated? It's a very simple narrative, enjoyable to watch, but also a beautiful film that makes you want to think about it just as much. I definitely recommend it.
"The Bigger Picture" was nominated for the 2015 Academy Awards, USA-OSCAR Best Short Film; 2015 BAFTA Awards-Best British Short Animation; 2015 Angers Europian First FF-Grand Jury Prize; 2014 Annecy IAFF- Cristal; 2015 Busan ISFF- Grand Prix for Best Picture; 2014 CANNES FF-Cinefondation Award Nominee; 2015 Corti Da Sogni Antonio Ricci ISFF- Premio Giuseppe Maestri Nominee; 2014 Edinburgh IFF-Creative Innovation in a Short Film, Best New British Animation Nominee; 2014 Hamptons IFF-Golden Starfish Award Nominee; 2014 Hiroshima IAFF-Grand Prix, 2014 Poitiers FF-Jury Prize Nominee; 2015 Tallinn Black Nights FF-Animated Dreams Award Nominee. It is a wonderful animated drama you'll watch with emotion. Our heroes, two brothers, are taking care of their elderly and sick mother. One is more responsible and is crushed under this heavy responsibility. The other brother is more careless and occasionally exploits his brother's labor. One day things get a bit more complicated; in the end, it comes down to conscience accounting. The film is quite beautiful and impressive. I think it contains plenty of messages for both parents and children. I definitely recommend watching it.
"Blocks" was nominated for 2020 Palm Springs ISF-Special Jury Award, Best Comedy Short Nominee; 2020 Salute Your Shorts FF-Audience Award; 2020 Satisfied Eye IFF-Best Comedy Short; 2020 Seriestfest-Jury Prize Best Director, Jury Prize Best Actress; 2020 Sundance FF-Best Short Film Grand Jury Prize Nominee; 2020 SXSW FF-SXSW Grand Jury Award Nominee; 2020 Nashville FF-Grand Jury Prize Nominee, 2020 Chicago IFF-Gold Hugo Nominee; 2020 AFI FEST-Grand Jury Prize Nominee. Blocks is a comedy film you'll watch with empathy. Our hero is a mother who struggles to make time for herself and thinks she's compromising too much of herself. She can't keep up with the work. This is essentially the biggest problem of mothers, small pieces going from themselves. All time being filled with home and children and not being able to make time for oneself. In our film, this has been handled very well with comedic elements. Also, the reflection of toy blocks on the mother has been described with a wonderful metaphor. I definitely recommend watching it.
"Patision Avenue" won awards and nominations in Various Categories: 2019 AGEAN FF, International Bosphorus FF- Best Short Film; 2019 Aguilar De Campoo SFF- Best Director Award, Best Short Nominee; 2019 Blue Danuse FF- Best Cinematography; 2018 Bosphorus FF Short Film Competition; 2019 Busan ISFF- Excellence Award for Best Picture; 2019 Clermon Ferrand ISFF - Special Jury Award, Canal+ Award, International Competition Nomination, Grand Prix Nomination; 2018 Hollywood FF - Global Grand Jury Prize; 2019 Vilnius IFF, 2018 Venice FF, 2019 Trieste FF, 2018 Tirana IFF, 2019 The International SFF of Cyprus, 2019 Tampere FF, 2018 PÖFF Shorts, 2018 NDU IFF, 2019 Moscow IFF, 2019 Minimalen, 2019 Melbourne IFF, 2019 LAGFF, 2019 Ljubljana IFF, 2018 Heart of Gold ISFF, 2019 Hellenic FAA, 2018 Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma, 2019 Dresden FF, 2020 Cleveland IFF, 2018 Chicago IFF, 2019 Aspen Shortfast. Patision Avenue is a wonderful drama you'll enjoy watching. Our hero is an actress mother. The events that develop during a phone conversation while walking on the road and doing voice exercises, and a sudden big change are the subject. You clearly see in the film the woman's being trapped between the role assigned to her in social roles and her profession, her need for help. The difficulty of explaining something to a small child, the helplessness there is very well handled. It even leads the audience to anxiety and tension while watching. We too have experienced such chaos in some periods of our lives. Our day that started calmly and beautifully suddenly takes on a completely different form, we can't get out of it. Another aspect of the film is that we witness the events by following our hero only from behind as if we're in a computer game. The parallel between the change in her hair and the change in her mood has incredibly increased the impressiveness. I definitely found the film quite beautiful and impressive, I recommend it.
In Conclusion
For a short film and a short film producer, participating in a festival, being nominated, and especially winning an award is a very prestigious situation. It's quite valuable both in terms of career projection and as a source of finance for new projects. Encountering an award-winning film on a platform also creates a situation that motivates people to watch it.
As can be understood from the selection I recommend, the subjects of short films are subjects from within society, from us. The problems are our problems. Solution suggestions are important. Therefore, short film production is important and should definitely be supported and crowned with awards. Fortunately, we have short films in our lives.
